The Luther L. Terry Awards

Terms of the Awards

Award recipients are selected by the Luther L. Terry Award Selection Committee, which is comprised of internationally recognized tobacco control experts who represent the world's geographic regions. Each recipient receives a commemorative medal and attendant media coverage. No monetary reward is associated with the honor.

 The awards are presented every three years at the World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. The American Cancer Society is committed to sponsoring this global awards program through 2012 at the 15th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health.

Eligibility Criteria

Each nomination is carefully reviewed by the Award Selection Committee. In general:

• Nominees must have a demonstrated record of consistent excellence in tobacco control.
• Nominees must have served as exemplars and role models to others in the tobacco control movement.
• Nominees must have employed innovative, creative approaches to tobacco control.
• Nominees must not have any affiliation with the tobacco industry.

Any tobacco control advocate or organization meeting the above criteria and the qualifications set forth in the Award Category descriptions may be nominated for individual awards, including educators, social workers, grassroots organizers, academic and scientific researchers, government officials, physicians, and members of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and eligible organizations.

Timeline and nomination guidelines

The nomination period of the 2012 Luther L. Terry Awards is now open. We strongly encourage members of the global tobacco control community to nominate their peers and colleagues who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in the field.

• May 13, 2011: Nomination period begins. To submit a nomination, please consult our guidelines in the 2012 Luther L. Terry Awards Call for Nominations brochure, fill out the nomination form and send the nomination package to lutherterry@cancer.org before September 2, 2011. Please note that nominations will only be accepted by email.
• September 2, 2011: Deadline to receive nominations.
• December 5, 2011: 2012 Luther L. Terry Awards recipients are announced.
• March 20-24, 2012: Award ceremony during the 15th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health (WCTOH).
