National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable

What is the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable (NCCRT)?

Co-founded by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable (NCCRT) is a national coalition of public, private, and voluntary organizations, as well as invited individuals whose mission is to advance colorectal cancer control efforts by improving communication, coordination, and collaboration among health agencies, medical-professional organizations, and the public. The ultimate goal of the Roundtable is to increase the use of proven colorectal cancer screening tests among the entire population for whom screening is appropriate.

Through its collective efforts, the roundtable will:

• Strengthen the network of public and private organizations concerned with promoting colorectal cancer screening.
• Determine clinical and consumer barriers to screening through research.
• Assess current public awareness of and interest in screening.
• Develop and disseminate health messages.

NCCRT Achievement Highlights

• Successfully worked with Senator Hillary R. Clinton when she was First Lady to develop colorectal cancer public service announcements and schedule a White House event focused on screening.
• Published a formal business case for CRC screening for presentation to major insurers and payers.
• Conducted research examining colorectal cancer education among primary care residents.
• Held discussions related to quality in fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) that led to a publication on the accuracy of in-office FOBT.
• Developed a lexicon for reporting results of colonoscopy and for routine data-gathering to aid in continuing quality improvement through routine medical audits.
• Developed the Blue Star as the universal symbol for colorectal cancer.
• Designated "Preventable, Treatable, Beatable" as the universal message to increase awareness about the importance of early colorectal cancer detection.
• Created a primary care clinician’s evidence-based toolbox and guide, called How to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates in Practice.
• Conducted an analysis to determine whether increasing screening rates for the 50 to 64 population result in treatment cost savings to Medicare.
• Conducted a literature review and colorectal cancer media analysis to better understand how colorectal cancer screening education and outreach.

The NCCRT is a collaborative partnership with nearly 70 members across the nation. NCCRT partners include state health departments, professional organizations, medical societies, federal agencies, consumers, cancer survivors, managed care organizations, private industry, health educators, and many nationally recognized experts in the field of colorectal cancer.
