Helping Patients Make Decisions About Screening

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends that men have a chance to make an informed decision with their health care provider about whether to be screened for prostate cancer. The decision should be made after getting information about the uncertainties, risks, and potential benefits of prostate cancer screening. Men should not be screened unless they have received this information.

What You Should Know About Prostate Cancer Testing

This easy-reading brochure provides information about what experts know and do not know about prostate cancer testing and treatment. This information is meant to help men better understand the pros and cons of testing so they can begin to decide if testing is the right choice for them.

ACS Decision Aid for Prostate Cancer Screening

The ACS guidelines recommend that men receive information directly from their clinician or be referred to reliable and culturally appropriate resource. Patient decision aids are helpful in preparing men to make a decision whether to be tested. This decision aid can be used in your practice to help men with informed decision-making.

Prostate Cancer: Informed Decision Making Videos

The American Cancer Society has created two prostate cancer videos that address many of the core questions and concerns that men have regarding prostate cancer screening. One is targeted to the general public and highlights the issues and questions that men face when deciding whether to get tested. The other video is designed for clinicians and provides an overview of the information they should discuss with their patients to assist them in making informed decisions about prostate cancer screening.
