Countdown begins to the official kick off of American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in New York and New Jersey
New York, N.Y. (July 5, 2011) – We’ve just celebrated our nation’s birthday, now it’s time to start celebrating more birthdays…and more pink.
The American Cancer Society is gearing up for a series of kick off breakfasts across New York and New Jersey to mark progress and hope in the fight against breast cancer. The late July/early August kick offs start the countdown to the largest series of breast cancer awareness events in the two states, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
The theme of this year’s walk is More Pink For Your Green because support for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer benefits such a wide array of programs and services dedicated to fighting breast cancer. These include research, 24 hour breast cancer information, patient navigation, free lodging, survivor support, advocacy, peer counseling, rides to treatment and much more.
Cancer touches more than just the people diagnosed. It has an impact on everyone around them. That's why the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, educate people about ways to reduce their risk, and empower communities to join the fight. Every dollar you raise and every step you take will save lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against breast cancer.
Local websites for the walks in both New York and New Jersey are now live and can be found at cancer.org/stridesonline. With just a few clicks, visitors can create their own personal site, get the latest updates, form a team and register for their area event.
Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers have raised more than $400 million to help fight breast cancer through participating in the noncompetitive, 3- to 5-mile events. In 2010 alone, nearly 800,000 walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to save lives from breast cancer. The support allowed the American Cancer Society to dedicate crucial funds toward its mission of saving lives from cancer and that kind of support is needed again. The American Cancer Society is inviting all past participants to return to this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
