HopeClub: Opening Statement
August 13, 2010
American Cancer Society HopeClub Provides Support, Compassion and a Place to Belong
Statement from Diana Martin, Regional Vice President, American Cancer Society, announcing the new HopeClub.
“As of September 1st the facility at One Penny Lane will become the nation’s first American Cancer Society HopeClub.
While the name is new and the affiliation with Gilda’s Club Worldwide will cease, the spirit of community and mutual support that members have built at One Penny Lane will not change one bit. The HopeClub will offer professionally led support groups, the full range of American Cancer Society programs, and social gatherings designed to maintain and foster the unique sense of community that already has been established. The name reflects the ‘hope’ that the American Cancer Society shares every day for a world with less cancer and a ‘club’ atmosphere that welcomes everyone. The current facility will remain open through August 31, 2010.
The HopeClub will serve as the hub of all the American Cancer Society’s patient and family service programs in the Capital Region. Programs are open to cancer survivors, their families and friends – anyone who has been touched by cancer.
Through the creation of the HopeClub, the American Cancer Society will be able to serve more people with more services than ever before in the Capital Region. The purpose of this endeavor is to enhance our offerings and to expand our reach as the population of cancer survivors is expected to explode over the next few years. September 1st truly begins a new era in cancer support services for residents of the Capital Region.
More information about an open house this fall will be coming soon.”

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
