About Our Facility
Welcome to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Buffalo.
At the Hope Lodge Buffalo, we understand that treatment for cancer can be both financially and emotionally overwhelming. For many, treatment at Buffalo area medical centers provides the greatest hope, but requires an out of town stay, adding the extra burden of travel, lodging and food expenses. That is why the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Buffalo offers lodging at no cost for cancer patients being treated in the Buffalo area.
The Hope Lodge Buffalo offers:
- 15 guest rooms: four rooms with private bathrooms, eleven rooms with shared bathrooms
- A common kitchen area with two ovens, two stoves, two sinks, two dishwashers and two refrigerators
- Cable TV in all guest rooms
- Telephones in all guest rooms
- Internet access (cable) in all guest rooms
- Common living room with cable TV
- Common library with an Internet access computer workstation
- Private sitting areas
- Outdoor patio garden
- Free laundry facilities
- Transportation to and from treatment
- Cancer support and information
While the facility offers many of the comforts of home, the true magic of the Hope Lodge is the inviting atmosphere. Other guests, facing similar circumstances, rally around each other, offering strength and support. The volunteers and staff, many of whom are cancer survivors, strive to create an environment where guests can relax and concentrate on getting well.
Our History

In the early 1980's, the American Cancer Society's Western New York Region was approached by a nearby cancer treatment facility about bringing the Society's Hope Lodge to Western New York. A feasibility study was conducted, and found that there were many patients coming to the Buffalo area for their cancer treatment, but could not afford the additional cost of lodging and meals associated with their out of town stay. The feasibility study actually revealed that many patients were sleeping in their cars to avoid the cost of a hotel room.
In October of 1983, through the successful fundraising efforts of many volunteers, the American Cancer Society purchased a lovely late-Victorian home at 197 Summer Street in downtown Buffalo.
The house was renovated in January of 1984 and includes family dining and kitchen facilities, a living room, reception area, and 15 guest bedrooms. An elevator was also added.
In August of 1984, Hope Lodge Buffalo became the sixth of its kind in the nation and opened its doors to its first patients.
Since its opening, the Hope Lodge Buffalo has served as a home away from home to patients and their caregivers from all over the globe, including Greece, and many parts of the Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
