A suspicious area in the breast may be found by physical exam, mammogram, or another imaging test, or by some combination of these. But no matter of how it was found, the only way to know for sure if it is cancer is to do a biopsy. This means a sample of cells or tissue is taken from the area and looked at under the microscope. For suspicious areas that cannot be felt (and even for some that can), imaging tests may be used to be sure the right area is biopsied. There are several types of biopsies, and it is important for you to know which type the doctor recommends for you.
