Avis Budget CEO Drives Home a Healthy Point - Ronald L. Nelson
Ronald L. Nelson felt guilty encouraging Avis Budget Group, Inc., employees to participate in the company’s health and wellness programs created with the American Cancer Society when he wasn’t particularly healthy himself.
That’s why about a year ago this CEO of one of the vehicle rental industry’s leading companies got serious about reducing his risk of cancer and other serious diseases by following a healthier diet and adding exercise to his routine. The result: Nelson has lost an impressive 65 pounds and gained the respect of his colleagues and coworkers.
Understanding only too well that healthy employees can better serve their customers, Avis Budget Group offered the Society’s Active For LifeSM program to the company’s 21,000 associates. The wellness program provided them the opportunity to increase their physical activity and improve other healthy behaviors in order to reduce their risk of chronic diseases, and even encouraged team building among associates. Avis Budget also eliminated out-of-pocket expenses for preventive screenings and tobacco cessation programs in yet another effort to help employees stay well and get well.
The company has received the Cancer Gold Standard Accreditation and is very committed to the health of its employees – it also has customer health top of mind. As the first vehicle rental company to make their fleets smoke free, Avis Budget Group is helping their customers nationwide breathe easier and stay well.
“The health of our workforce and customers is vital to our mission,” says Nelson, who also serves as vice chair of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Cancer Society CEOs Against Cancer. “At Avis Budget Group, we are continuing to seek new ways to improve the customer experience and keep our employees healthy and happy, while driving new sources of revenue for our company.”
