CEO Works and Walks for Better Detection

Rob Cascella believes his company's mission goes beyond developing diagnostic products used for the detection of breast cancer and cervical cancer. The chief executive officer of Hologic strongly feels its mission is also about promoting wellness, including urging people to get screenings for cancer and to adopt healthier lifestyles that reduce their risk of the disease.

To do more for the cause of cancer prevention, Cascella and many of Hologic's 6,000 employees joined the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® campaign. In October 2011, Hologic, based in Bedford, Massachusetts, became a corporate sponsor of the local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Boston. Hologic employee teams, including Cascella and his family, walked in the event, raising $15,000, and Cascella and others on his management team organized a raffle to raise more dollars, for a total of $55,000 overall.

In addition, Hologic led an effort to raise funds for the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston. American Cancer Society Hope Lodge facilities provide accommodations free of charge to those who have to travel far from home for cancer treatment. Hologic, its management team and employees, as well as vendor partners raised more than $1 million to support the Boston location’s vital activities. For this accomplishment, Cascella and Hologic were honored at a gala event this past winter in Boston.

“Hologic is dedicated to the earliest possible detection of disease and providing the least invasive treatments and therapies – ultimately improving the health care outcomes for women around the world,” says Cascella, who joined the company in 2003 and became its CEO in 2009. “By helping with fundraising and participating in events such as Strides and [supporting] the Hope Lodge, we are actively participating in the fight against cancer.”

More than 270 nationwide Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk events raise awareness and dollars that help the American Cancer Society provide free resources and support to the one in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who seek help and support for their disease. Dollars raised also fund groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer, as well as help ensure access to mammograms for women who need them. The money also supports advocacy efforts to encourage lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

For the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Boston, Hologic has committed to be the lead sponsor participating as the Walker Challenge Sponsor in celebration of the 20th Anniversary for the event.

Hologic’s commitment to helping end breast cancer is “a phenomenal source of pride” for CEO Cascella. “Our employees have really stepped up and devoted their personal time. When it comes to events, our folks are all over it. They are willing to devote time, money, and effort to these lifesaving causes.”
