In this capacity, Vilma's responsibilities and research have been focused on the monitoring of population level prevalence of adherence to cancer-risk (modifiable) behaviors (e.g., skin cancer prevention, tobacco use, obesity related patterns of diet and physical activity) as well as population-level participation in ACS-recommended cancer screening behaviors.
In collaboration with colleagues at the ACS, she oversees the publication of the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Facts & Figures. This publication is a key companion to the annual Cancer Facts & Figures. In addition, she has been engaged in primary research activities related to cancer prevention and control. She received her undergraduate degree in applied biology with honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and her PhD in epidemiology from the University of South Carolina.
