How many people get bladder cancer?

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for bladder cancer in the United States for 2015 are:

  • About 74,000 new cases of bladder cancer
  • About 16,000 deaths from bladder cancer

Bladder cancer is more common among men than women and more common among whites than blacks. The chance of a man having this cancer during his lifetime is about 1 in 26. For women, it is about 1 in 90. Risk factors (such as smoking) can affect these chances.

This is a cancer mainly of older people. About 9 out of 10 people with this cancer are over the age of 55. The average age when the cancer is found is 73.
