Kenneth Portier, PhD

Kenneth Portier, PhD, directs the activities of the Statistics & Evaluation Center in the Intramural Research Department at the American Cancer Society. Also, as an applied biostatistician, he helps design data collection schemes and directs staff in the analysis of the resulting data. He supports evaluation of Society programs for cancer survivors, evaluation of Society extramural grant programs, analysis of cancer survivor quality of life data and risk assessment issues related to environmental carcinogens. Some of his time is spent engaged in statistical methodological development and health disparities mapping.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, Dr. Portier is an affiliate professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Emory University. He also holds a courtesy faculty appointment at the University of Florida, where he spent 27 years as a statistical consultant to researchers in agriculture, natural resources and the environment and as a teacher of statistical methods to graduate students in associated science disciplines. He has coauthored more than 200 publications in agriculture, natural resources, environmental sciences, and more recently in public health.

As an advisor to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program, and the World Health Organization, Dr. Portier has helped review the methodology and the evidence for assessing human and ecological risks from environmental substances that impact human health, including environmental carcinogens. He is currently a member of the Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Factors Coordinating Committee that is reviewing federal funding for breast cancer research and prevention and forming recommendations for future directions for this funding.
