| International Tobacco Control |
Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the world. It will kill 5 million people this year, and 10 million a year by 2020. Tobacco use has become a global epidemic of monumental proportions, addicting thousands of people a day despite our knowledge of how, why, and where it occurs.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to collaborating with organizations worldwide to share our knowledge and join our efforts with others to end the suffering from tobacco-related disease and death for all people, regardless of where they live. Through its international grant programs, workshops, research, training, advocacy, and other efforts the ACS hopes to improve the lives of millions of people around the world.
Please see the links below for more information about the global tobacco epidemic and ACS international tobacco control programs.

| Tobacco use has taken hundreds of millions of lives during the last century alone. Estimates for the future are grim as tobacco use continues to spread throughout the world, addicting thousands of people every day.
| The devastating impact of tobacco use and addiction affect all countries in the world, and efforts to minimize these effects require cooperation among governments and individuals on an international level. The international tobacco control community’s efforts to halt the spread of the global tobacco epidemic have resulted in the world’s first public health treaty, the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. There is, however, much important work left to be done by advocates, researchers, governments, and volunteers around the globe.

| The ACS promotes the collection and dissemination of evidence based tobacco control research, advocacy for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and the improvement of access to technology for tobacco control advocates through the funding of various tobacco control grant programs.

| Through its publications, the Society shares tobacco-related data and advocacy strategies with tobacco control researchers and advocates around the world.
| A strong tobacco control community is essential for every country—especially those most targeted by the tobacco industry. The ACS supports tobacco control communities around the world, helping them to develop their own local strategies to fight tobacco use.
