The 2007 Corporate IMPACT Award was given to AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company with US headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware in recognition of its $7 million contribution to build an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® in Boston, Massachusetts. When it opens in the fall of 2008, the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center will annually provide free lodging and support services to more than 1,500 cancer outpatients and their caregivers who must travel far from home to receive treatment. "Because of their generosity and vision, the American Cancer Society will be able to begin providing lodging and support nearly two years ahead of schedule," said David S. Rosenthal, MD, co-chair of the volunteer Hope Lodge Boston Campaign Cabinet.
AstraZeneca has a history of supporting Hope Lodge, having previously supported the Philadelphia Hope Lodge with a lead naming gift.
In addition to its support of Hope Lodge, AstraZeneca and the American Cancer Society recently announced a strategic collaboration to significantly extend the reach of the Society's innovative Patient Navigator Program – an initiative that provides individualized personal guidance for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers to help them navigate the cancer experience and places an emphasis on assisting the medically underserved. With AstraZeneca's pledge of $10 million, as well the time of its local employees and other resources, the American Cancer Society will accelerate development of at least 50 new Patient Navigator Program sites over the next five years in communities throughout the United States. This gift represents the single largest gift restricted to one purpose or program in the 93-year history of the American Cancer Society.
