Smoking-related diseases remain the most preventable cause of death in the United States. In fact, each year smoking accounts for an estimated 438,000 premature deaths – including 38,000 deaths among nonsmokers as a result of secondhand smoke. Despite these statistics, evidence indicates that tobacco use prevention and cessation initiatives work. So for more than 30 years, the American Cancer Society has promoted its tobacco control platform through the Great American Smokeout®. As a multi-year sponsor, the Novartis Corporation was a part of the Great American Smokeout 30th anniversary celebration in 2006. This November, Novartis and four of its national retail chain accounts (Kroger, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart) that are Novartis nicotine replacement therapy licensees will execute an integrated in-store promotion for their private label nicotine replacement therapy products. Promotions will vary by chain and will focus on increasing traffic of customers purchasing quit-smoking aids to general Great American Smokeout promotions.
