The Eastern Division of the American Cancer Society provides hope, progress and answers to the residents of New York and New Jersey. With 45 local offices throughout the two states, the Eastern Division is dedicated to reaching the diverse populations to provide them with the information, services and support they need to confront cancer.
Covering two of the most populous states in the nation, the Eastern Division includes 83 counties with an estimated, combined population of more than 27 million people. The burden of cancer on the two states for the year 2001 includes approximately 124,200 new cases diagnosed with an anticipated mortality of 54,300 people.
In the fiscal year 2000, the Eastern Division reported nearly $82 million in revenues. These funds were collected from a variety of fund-raising activities, including special events, such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Daffodil Days and Relay For Life, as well as legacies and bequests, contributions and other sources.
The Eastern Division provided nearly $36.7 million in support to our nationwide cancer efforts in 2000, and saw approximately $35 million of the $108 million national research dollars return to institutions within our two states. The Eastern Division was formed as the result of a merger, effective September 1, 1998, that drew together six formerly independent divisions from New York and New Jersey into one streamlined organization.
