On November 15, 2007, the American Cancer Society will celebrate the Great American Smokeout - a time to celebrate those who have quit smoking. It is also a time to acknowledge that nearly 440,000 Americans die prematurely each year from tobacco use, while secondhand smoke claims another 35,000 - 40,000 lives.
Each day, 4,000 kids under the age of 18 try smoking for the first time and 1,000 of those kids become regular, daily smokers.
This year's Great American Smokeout efforts will focus around the theme, "Quit.Win.Live." Visit the Livefree.Smokefree site to learn how to quit smoking for good with smoking cessation information, tips for quitting and tips for parents. Win an iPhone or iPod by telling us in one minute or less why it's important to quit smoking or not start at all. Lastly, take control of your health and life, and learn more about the connection between tobacco use and cancer. Spread the knowledge and help others become smokefree through e-cards, stickers and more.
Your health, your life -- it's time to Livefree.Smokefree.
