Since 1986, the American Cancer Society's Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge has combined
a home-like atmosphere with easy access to Gainesville medical centers for
cancer patients who have traveled from out of town for treatment. All accommodations
and services of the American Cancer Society and Hope Lodge are free of charge to
patients and caregivers. This service is made possible by private
donations to the American Cancer Society, the generosity of the Winn-Dixie
Foundation and its employees and the University of Florida, which donated the
property.
Hope Lodge features 45 large suites, consisting of a sitting room, bedroom
and bath, and 2 single rooms with private baths that comfortably accommodate the
patient having daily, out-patient treatment and one caregiver. Residents
purchase and prepare their own food in a fully equipped kitchen and enjoy a
friendly atmosphere in a community dining area. Linens, towels, laundry
facilities and housekeeping equipment are furnished as residents are asked to
maintain the upkeep of their own suites. Adding to the friendly and
supportive environment are TV lounges, libraries, beautiful grounds and sitting
areas that offer comfortable surroundings and a chance to visit with other
residents and visitors.

American Cancer Society's Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge volunteers assume important
roles in the program by serving as receptionists and organizing complimentary
dinners and activities such as Bingo games for the residents. All
activities at the Lodge are optional.

persons and medical professionals a full range of educational and patient
service programs sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Meeting
facilities may be utilized by community groups by reservation.

Volunteers
Cancer treatment is often a long and emotional experience. Meeting the
medical needs of cancer patients is only part of the cure. Addressing the
human needs is also critical and that's what the American Cancer Society's
Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge is all about. Volunteers help make the difference,
by sharing and caring with Hope Lodge residents.
Whether you have a few hours once a week or once a month, you can make a
difference. Volunteer as an individual or as part of a community or civic
group. Volunteer on an ongoing basis or to do a one-time project.
