R.O.C.K. Camp
R.O.C.K. Camp in partnership with Camp Boggy Creek provides up to 280 children with cancer an opportunity to experience the fun and adventure of summer camp without feeling different from other children. While in a safe environment, children enjoy all the traditional camp activities, including canoeing, swimming, music, arts and crafts, archery, sports, fishing, talent shows and campfires. Campers attend free of charge.
Eligibility: Campers must be ages 7–16, and must be under cancer treatment (or off treatment no more than 3 years). Campers are referred by their pediatric oncologist.
Site: Camp Boggy Creek near Eustis, Fla.
2009 Dates: June 10-16—Children from North Florida and Orlando
July 8-14—Children from South Florida, Tampa and St. Petersburg
Families R.O.C.K. Weekend
Families R.O.C.K. Weekend is an annual educational retreat for children with cancer, their parents and siblings. Up to 100 families attend the weekend free of charge.
Eligibility: Children with cancer (infants up to age 18), their parents and siblings may attend. Families are referred by their child’s pediatric oncologist.
Site: Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista
2009 Date: September 4-6, 2009
Friday -- A fun, interactive dinner at the Resort
Saturday -- Educational and skill building sessions for parents
Fun activities, education, arts and crafts for children
Sunday -- A day for the family at a Disney theme park
Goals: Parents learn more about their child’s cancer from medical professionals. Parents meet other parents who have a child with cancer and share common experiences. Children learn to better cope with cancer and its treatment.
R.O.C.K. College Scholarships
American Cancer Society R.O.C.K. College Scholarships help provide a promising future for young, college-bound cancer survivors. The scholarship committee considers financial need, scholarship, community service and leadership. The American Cancer Society awarded 169 college scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Eligibility: Diagnosis of pediatric cancer, under 21 at the time of application
Students must be a Florida residents and must plan to attend an accredited
college, university or vocational school in Florida
Scholarships: Up to $3,000 per year for tuition and $300 per year for textbooks
Deadline: April 10 (every year)
How to apply: Applications are available in December. Students can contact the Florida Division Office at 800-444-1410 to request an application or download an application from www.cancer.org.
Reaching Out to Cancer Kids is an American Cancer Society’s Florida Division program that includes R.O.C.K. Camp, College Scholarships and Families R.O.C.K. Weekend. As resources are available after these programs are fully funded, R.O.C.K. Programs also support childhood cancer research; programs to detect childhood cancer early; help for parents to access the best treatment for their child; programs that will eliminate childhood behaviors known to cause cancer later in life and/or diminish suffering of the child with cancer and the child’s family.
