| R.O.C.K. College Scholarship Program |
 |
R.O.C.K. College Scholarships are one of three American Cancer Society Reaching Out to Cancer Kids, R.O.C.K. Programs in Florida. The other programs are R.O.C.K. Camp and Families R.O.C.K. Weekend.
The American Cancer Society's R.O.C.K. College Scholarship Program is an award-winning college scholarship opportunity exclusively for students with a history of cancer. The program gives young cancer survivors a chance to pursue an undergraduate degree from an accredited Florida university, community college, or vocational technical school.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Personal diagnosis of cancer before age 21
- Under 21 at the time of application
- Attend an accredited college, university or vocational school in Florida during the 2010-2011 academic year
The committee considers financial need, community service, leadership and scholarship when selecting scholarship recipients. The American Cancer Society's Florida Division is unable to fund postgraduate degree-seeking students.
SCHOLARSHIP:
An American Cancer Society college scholarship is worth a maximum of $3,000 toward tuition per year, dependent on the number of hours taken, plus $300 per year for textbooks. All scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the American Cancer Society's volunteer college scholarship committee based on the student's financial needs, scholarship, community service, leadership, cancer diagnosis, cancer type and length of treatment.
Scholarships are limited to a maximum 130 semester credit hours, over a maximum of five years, whichever comes first. Due to limited resources, the American Cancer Society may not be able to award scholarships to all young cancer survivors who apply.
HISTORY:
Established in 1992, the scholarship program is designed to provide young cancer patients an opportunity to reach their academic potential - and their career dreams - by earning a college degree.
AWARD:
The American Cancer Society, Florida Division, Inc. was named Scholarship Provider of the Year by the National Scholarship Providers Association in December 2000.
