| R.O.C.K. College Scholarship Program |
 |
R.O.C.K. College Scholarships is one of three American Cancer Society R.O.C.K. Programs in Florida. The other programs are R.O.C.K. Camp and Families R.O.C.K. Weekend.
Going to college is a dream-come-true for many young people. Just choosing a college can be very exciting. Making the grades and finding the money to pay for college can be a real challenge to both student and family. But when a family has to add the financial and emotional burdens associated with fighting cancer, the challenge to get a college education can become almost overwhelming. This is why the American Cancer Society's R.O.C.K. College Scholarship Program is so important to outstanding Florida students.
The American Cancer Society's R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) College Scholarship Program is an award-winning college scholarship opportunity exclusively for students with a history of cancer. The program gives young cancer survivors a chance to pursue an undergraduate degree from an accredited Florida university, community college, or vocational technical school.
ELIGIBILITY:
Florida Residents who have had a diagnosis of cancer before age 21 are eligible. Applicants must be under 21 at the time of application, and must attend an accredited school within Florida. The committee considers financial need, community service, leadership and scholarship when selecting scholarship recipients.
SCHOLARSHIP:
An American Cancer Society college scholarship is worth a maximum of $3,000 toward tuition per year, dependent on the number of hours taken, plus $300 per year for textbooks. All scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the American Cancer Society's volunteer college scholarship committee based on the student's financial needs, scholarship, community service and leadership.
Scholarships are limited to a maximum 130 semester credit hours, over a maximum of five years, whichever comes first. Due to limited resources, the American Cancer Society may not be able to award scholarships to all young cancer survivors who apply.
HISTORY:
Established in 1992, the scholarship program is designed to provide young cancer patients an opportunity to reach their academic potential - and their career dreams - by earning a college degree.
AWARD:
The American Cancer Society, Florida Division, Inc. was named Scholarship Provider of the Year by the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) in December 2000.
