Our 2nd annual Bicycles Battling Cancer bike ride is scheduled for July 25, 2010. Whether you are an avid cyclist or haven’t ridden in years, you can do this ride! And, you'll be fighting cancer while improving your own health.

This scenic 73-mile ride from Worcester to Brookline received high marks from the inaugural riders, including teams from Genzyme and the Red Hat Inc. technology company in Westford, MA.

Several cancer survivors took part, as did many riders making the trip in honor of survivors and loved ones. Here is an email we received from a BBC rider whose dad died of brain cancer a year ago:

"You planned a fantastic event that ran smoothly and was very enjoyable! THANK YOU!!!! Thanks also to the incredible volunteers everywhere who kept us on track and hydrated and fed and encouraged.  They were absolutely amazing. I look forward to next year."

It's always inspiring to learn what inspires our volunteers. Here are two stories taken from their personal Web pages on the Bicycles Battling Cancer Web site:

"Thanks to people like you, I had hope when I was diagnosed with leukemia (CML) back in 1996. The bone marrow transplant cured me, and I was back in shape not long after. I learned that a doctor funded by the ACS won a Nobel prize for work he did to improve the outcome of the bone marrow transplant. So there is a good chance that I am alive today thanks to people just like you."

"I am riding this event in memory of 2 friends who recently lost their long term battles with cancer. My friend Barbara and my friend Jim both were inspirations to me with their positive outlook on life and survival, even at the end of their lives. They both had the will to live and survive. I am fortunate to be healthy and able to continue my life and want to honor their memories by completing this ride and raising as much as I possible can."

If you'd like to receive updates about this event, or if you'd like to volunteer at next year's ride, please email us at bicyclesbattlingcancer@cancer.org, or call Holly Randall at 603.471.4124.
