Lace up your tennis shoes, pack your tent and sleeping bag, and join the crowd. It's time for the annual American Cancer Society's Relay For Life! Get a group of your friends together as a Relay team and join us for up to 24 hours of fun, excitement, and an all-around great time. We'll have music, food, contests, awards, and prizes. At the same time, you will be honoring the courageous spirit of those battling cancer. You don't need to be a track star to be a winner in this race for life.
Team Spirit
At the Relay For Life the idea is to have fun while raising money to fight cancer, and provide services to cancer patients and their families. The Relay brings together friends, family, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches...people from all walks of life. Those teams of 8-12 members then seek sponsorship prior to the Relay from friends, relatives, employers, associates, and businesses, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer!
Cancer Survivors Walk With Courage
If you're a cancer survivor, don't miss the cancer survivors' lap, which opens the Relay For Life. Cancer survivors walk the initial lap, the first of many before they reach the finish line. This lap symbolizes the courage that survivors and their families display and sustain in their lives.
Luminarias Spell Hope
You'll have an opportunity to recognize your loved ones with the evening luminaria ceremony. Lighted luminarias, sold by volunteers, are decorated with the names of cancer survivors, as well as the names of those who have lost the battle with cancer. Placed around the track, they light the night for the walkers and runners. It is a special time to remember a loved one, and once lit, the luminarias stay lit until the early morning hours.
Not Just Another Slumber Party
A festive atmosphere sets the tone in "Tent City". Relay participants set up camp, make new friends, catch up with old ones, entertain each other, play games, share experiences, and get a little shut-eye between laps. So bring your sleeping bag and spend the night, you won't want to miss the action!
