Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarships
Serving Hawaii, Guam, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Society's High Plains Division is proud to offer academic or vocational scholarships to select applicants. Our Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarships offer undergraduate educational or vocational trade school support for students who have survived any cancer during their childhood. Scholarships awards will be determined by a competitive review process. The number of scholarships awarded is dependent on the amount of funding available, and the number of complete applications.

Scholarship Amount and Distribution

Scholarships are:

  • $1,000 per academic year.
  • Paid directly to the accredited institution.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a legal resident of Hawaii, Kansas, Guam, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Texas.
  • Have received a cancer diagnosis before age 21.
  • Be under age 25 at the time of application.
  • Be a high school senior, or already in college, and have a GPA of at least 2.0 (based on a 4.0 scale).
  • Be accepted to and or attend an accredited college or university for undergraduate education, trade, or vocational school.

Documentation Needed

Applicants must provide the following information:

  • A completed application form.
  • Proof of residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill.
  • A copy of applicant's high school or college transcript from the most recently completed semester.
  • A copy of applicant's Student Aid Report. The SAR represents official results of their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • A copy of acceptance letter from an accredited college, university, trade, or vocational school.
  • A two-page, single-spaced, 12-pt font personal essay detailing the applicant's:
    • Goals - Education and/or training plans immediately following High School and possible career goals/paths.
    • Life Experience – Courage, self-reliance, and/or determination affecting life to this point and how life experiences can help prepare you to reach future goals.
    • Community Involvement Including Cancer Related Activities – Any volunteer work done by the applicant or immediate family to benefit individuals, groups, non-profit organizations (including the American Cancer Society), agencies, schools, and or the community at large.
    • Any cancer-related involvement should be highlighted. Should also mention any awards or recognition received.
  • Two reference letters: One must be on a letterhead from a physician or treatment facility verifying cancer type and date of diagnosis. The other reference form should be completed by an adult over age 21 who is not a relative.
