| Detailed Guide: Leukemia - Children's |
What Should You Ask Your Doctor About Leukemia? |
 |
|
It is important to have frank, open discussions with your child's cancer care team. They want to answer all of your questions, no matter how trivial they might seem. For instance, consider these questions:
- What kind of leukemia does my child have?
- What are the prognostic factors?
- What treatment choices are available?
- What do you recommend and why?
- What should we do to be ready for treatment?
- What risks or side effects are there to the treatments you suggest?
- What is my child's outlook for survival?
- What are the chances of recurrence with these treatment plans?
In addition to these sample questions, be sure to write down your own. For instance, you might want more information about type of toxicity and duration so you can plan your child's school schedule. Or, you may want to ask about second opinions or about clinical trials for which your child may qualify.
