| Career Story: Kathy Sullivan |
| Save lives. Fulfill yours. |
 |
Kathy Sullivan began her career with the American Cancer Society as a field representative responsible for volunteer recruitment,
fundraising, and program delivery in seven counties west of St. Louis, Missouri. Today, Kathy is the director of Learning and Development
for the High Plains Division, which includes all of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and the Hawaii-Pacific Corporation.
In that role, she provides leadership, direction, and support in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Learning and Development
programs for staff and volunteers within that Division. She has this to say about her experience and career progression within the Society:
“Working for the American Cancer Society has allowed me to work with people from all walks of life and from all professions. I have gained
organizational and management skills both through years of formal training and by working alongside fellow staff members and countless
volunteers over the last 20-plus years. My well-honed interpersonal skills are the direct result of years of volunteer relationship management
and personnel management experience. I cannot think of another organization that could have provided me with the depth and breadth of exposure
to such a variety of learning experiences. I am honored and proud to be an American Cancer Society staff member.”
Even after being with the Society for more than two decades, Kathy is still motivated to be a part of our organization’s ongoing mission to
bring help and hope to those touched by cancer. She says:
“My greatest motivation in working for the American Cancer Society is being a resource to anyone who has been affected by cancer,
directly or indirectly. Although my current role is to provide orientation, training, and development opportunities for staff and volunteers, I am still
approached by family, friends, and colleagues on a weekly basis seeking information and support surrounding a cancer diagnosis that has
affected their lives. There is no greater motivation for me than being part of such an enormous, volunteer-driven organization that helps saves
lives on a daily basis!”
