Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplants

Here we will give you an overview of bone marrow transplants and other types of stem cell transplants that are used to treat cancer. We will outline what transplant is usually like, and discuss some of the issues that come with it.

What Is a Bone Marrow or Stem Cell Transplant?
Stem cell transplants are used to restore the stem cells when the bone marrow has been destroyed by disease, chemotherapy (chemo), or radiation.
When Do People Need Stem Cell Transplants?
The cancer care team must compare the risks linked with the disease itself versus the risks of the transplant procedure.
Types of Stem Cell Transplants
The type of transplant depends on where the stem cells come from.
Sources of Stem Cells for Transplants
There are 3 possible sources of stem cells to use for transplants: bone marrow, the bloodstream (peripheral or circulating blood), and umbilical cord blood from newborns.

The immune system plays an important role in the success of any allogeneic stem cell transplant.
