Frequently Asked Questions

The Relay For Life is coming back to Second Life for a fourth consecutive year. The volunteer community is in the midst of preparing the largest contiguous event Second Life has ever seen. After three consecutive years of exceptional growth in dollars raised and number of participants we have set a goal of 2,000 Relay Walkers raising raising Linden Dollars L$ 27,000,000 which is $100,000 in US Dollars. We hope you will join us there! In 2007 Second Life® Relay for Life raised more than $118,000 and attracted more than 1,700 participants to the walkathon event. Created by more than 75 volunteers, the track was themed ‘Quest For a Cure’. Volunteers created scenes from action and adventure stories. Avatars encountered opportunities along the way to have fun while donating money - lighting virtual luminaries, and participating in events such as sky diving roller coaster rides, and treasure hunts.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon ran around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. Today Relay For Life is held in more than 4,600 communities in the United States and in 23 countries across the globe. To date, Relay For Life has raised more than $1.5 billion to help the Society accelerate the progress against cancer by saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight back against this disease.

Our Expanding Role in the Second Life Community

The Society has expanding its role in the community by establishing a virtual space on our own American Cancer Society Island. This virtual office serves a number of purposes including an interactive cancer information resource center, a venue for peer support groups, as well as a headquarters for in-world event planning. We are appreciative of all of the volunteers who have been busy planning events and making improvement to our island and we hope you will visit it soon.

Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to lend help in several areas, both working inside Second Life and out. Please contact Randal Moss at Randal.Moss@cancer.org if you have any questions, or would like to volunteer or participate in the Second Life Relay. If you are a resident of Second Life send a message to RC Mars of Fayandria Foley for information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Second Life® Relay for Life (SLRFL)? It's a volunteer-driven effort to hold an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event in the Second Life® world. It's a walk-a-thon in cyberspace, where SL residents gather, camp out, dance, donate money and of course walk our custom built track that encompasses the 96 acre park.

How is this Relay different than my local Relay? The main difference is location. SL residents set up and decorate campsites, and sell small items to help raise Relay money just like at your local relay. However, since this is a virtual environment you may see some teams offering blimp rides, or holding sailboat races inside the park.

When is the Second Life® Relay for Life? July 19-20

What is Second Life® ? Second Life® is a multiplayer 3D community on the Internet. Users create their own characters - called avatars - who build a virtual world, bustling with commerce, social interactions, and civic activities. Second Life® is owned and operated by Linden Lab.

How can I participate in the SLRFL? To be a virtual walker you'll need to sign up for an account at www.Secondlife.com. A lifetime membership is free. Once inside Second Life you can fully participate in this fun online version of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. You can create teams with your friends and family from around the country, hold fund raisers and make donations and you'll be able to watch a live Webcast when the event takes place. Keep informed of all the festivities at www.SLRFL.com.

How can I help make this virtual Relay For Life a real success? We'd appreciate some word-of-mouth advertising, so tell your friends and family members to check out the event and make a donation. You will be able to make a donation here using a credit card. Every contribution helps advance the Society's work against cancer and in support of families touched by this disease. If you're already a 'resident' of Second Life and a skilled builder let us know so we can give you some projects in the SLRFL community. IM RC Mars of Fayandria Foley for information. How do I donate money? You can make a donation here using a credit card. SL residents can donate at ATMs throughout the Second Life world, as well as within the Relay event itself.
