Why Is Advocacy Important?
  • Cancer is the nation’s number one health concern and second leading cause of death. Our country’s policies and laws should reflect that concern.

  • Changes in laws can impact millions of people and are a vital step toward reaching ACS’ goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Celebration on the Hill is designed to send a message to our elected leaders that we need to stay committed to enacting policies and providing resources that will help alleviate our nation’s cancer burden.

  • We want our legislators to know how their decisions can help or hinder the fight against cancer and ultimately save lives. Relay For Life Celebration on the Hill will help us make cancer a national priority.

How legislators and public officials can help reduce our country’s cancer burden:

  • Appropriations Double NIH funding by 2003; Fully fund NCI; Fund critical CDC programs.

  • Access Pass legislation that expands access to cancer care, prevention and awareness programs.

  • Medically Underserved Implement programs aimed at reducing disparities in prevention, awareness and treatment.

  • Tobacco Strengthen regulation of tobacco products and provide sufficient funding for tobacco control programs.
