American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society programs listed below may be offered in your area. Check your local phone book for your nearest Society office or call 1-800-ACS-2345.

I Can Cope®

I Can Cope is an educational program for people facing cancer, either as a patient or as a caregiver. The program offers information you can trust, peer support, and helpful coping skills.

Look Good...Feel Better

This program is for women with cancer going through chemotherapy or radiation treatment. It teaches skills to improve and enhance the way you look through the use of make-up, wigs, turbans and scarves. The program also focuses on beauty tips that can help a woman have a better self-image.

Man to Man®

The Man to Man Program is for men who have prostate cancer and their families. The purpose of the program is to give people accurate information about diagnosis, treatment options, living with the side effects of treatment, and other related issues. Men and their partners are able to ask questions and share common experiences and feelings with the help of expert leaders and the mutual aid of the group.

This program also promotes awareness of prostate cancer as a major health care concern for all men. It is believed that men and their partners can greatly benefit from the program and taking part in the program soon after diagnosis is very important to help reduce anxiety and help families adjust to the changes that come with prostate cancer. There is also a bulletin board on the American Cancer Society Web site (www.cancer.org), where patients can post questions about prostate cancer and get a response from medical experts.

Reach to Recovery®

Reach to Recovery volunteers are breast cancer survivors who have adjusted well to their own diagnosis and treatment. The program matches a trained volunteer with a woman facing the emotional and physical challenges related to the diagnosis, treatment, and effects of her breast cancer. The patient may request a Reach to Recovery visit at any point in her breast cancer experience, including early support at the time of diagnosis. Visits can also be set up for women thinking about breast reconstruction or for a woman whose cancer has come back after treatment.

To set up a Reach to Recovery visit, contact the American Cancer Society office listed in your local telephone book or call 1-800-ACS-2345. The patient or her doctor, nurse, family member, or friend can ask for the visit. Personal visits are recommended, but the visit can also take place over the telephone. The Reach to Recovery visitor often makes a follow-up visit or phone call to the patient to answer any questions or to offer more support if needed.
