American Cancer Society patient programs

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. The Society is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with 13 chartered Divisions and a local presence in nearly every community nationwide.

The Society is the largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States. The Society's programs focus on tobacco control, sun protection, diet and nutrition, comprehensive school health education, early detection, and treatment. A variety of service and rehabilitation programs are available to patients and their families. Through its advocacy program, the Society educates policy makers about cancer and how it affects the individuals and families they represent. For more information call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit our Web site at www.cancer.org. Some of the Society's patient service programs include:

Cancer Survivors Network (CSN)SM

The CSN is an American Cancer Society resource created by and for cancer survivors and their families to address the need to connect with others who have been touched by cancer. People in this virtual community share experiences, strength, and hope using the free, interactive service on the Web through www.acscsn.org.

Reach to Recovery®

This peer support program is for women who have a personal concern about breast cancer. This program provides information and support to women by connecting them with someone who has been through the breast cancer experience herself--the Reach to Recovery volunteer. The patient may meet or talk to a volunteer at any point during her breast cancer experience.

"tlc"™ magalog

This free magazine-catalog is for women being treated for cancer. The catalog has products especially designed for breast cancer survivors, as well as for women who have hair loss because of cancer treatment. "tlc" offers a variety of products that can help ease the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment, and the format allows the woman to shop from the privacy of her own home. "tlc" also offers practical information about concerns women being treated for cancer may have.

Look Good...Feel Better®

This nationwide public service program helps women learn to overcome the appearance-related side effects associated with cancer treatment. Trained volunteers offer guidance and instruction to women in a supportive environment, helping them regain their confidence and self-esteem. This program is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council, and the National Cosmetology Association.

Man to Man

This self-help and/or support group program provides information and support to men with prostate cancer about prostate cancer and related issues. Some Man to Man groups may invite wives and partners to attend meetings. In other locations, wives and partners may meet separately in a group setting called Side by Side.

I Can Cope®

This series of educational classes is for people with cancer, their families, and friends. This program gives facts, encouragement, and practical hints from health care professionals and community representatives.
