About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

The American Cancer Society offers up-to-date cancer information, educational programs, services, and referrals. Check your telephone directory for your local American Cancer Society office or call 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345).

Reach to Recovery®

All Reach to Recovery volunteers are breast cancer survivors who have successfully adjusted to their own diagnosis and treatment. The program carefully matches a trained volunteer with a woman facing the emotional and physical challenges related to the diagnosis, treatment, and effects of breast cancer. The patient may request a Reach to Recovery visit at any time after finding out she has breast cancer, including at the time of diagnosis. Visits can also be arranged for women thinking about breast reconstruction or for a woman whose cancer has come back. To schedule a Reach to Recovery visit, contact the American Cancer Society office listed in the telephone directory, or call 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345).

Look Good...Feel Better®

Look Good...Feel Better is a program just for women going through chemotherapy or radiation treatments. It teaches skills to enhance appearance through the use of cosmetics, wigs, turbans, and scarves. The program focuses on beauty techniques that can help a woman cope with the physical changes resulting from cancer treatment. There is also a program for teens. For more information, contact 1-800-395-LOOK or your local American Cancer Society office.

I Can Cope®

This program helps people with cancer and their families get the information and psychological help they need. These classes discuss the disease and provide information on local resources. In this series, you will learn how to cope with daily health problems, express feelings, and live with the limitations that cancer presents. Through lectures, group discussions, and study assignments, the course helps people with cancer regain a sense of control over their lives. Contact 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345) or your local American Cancer Society office for more information.

tlc ™ (Tender Loving Care®)

tlc ™ is an American Cancer Society publication. It is both a magazine and catalog that combines helpful articles and information about cancer with specialized mail order products for women coping with breast cancer or any cancer treatment that causes hair loss. Products featured in the catalog include wigs, hairpieces, breast forms, prostheses, bras, hats, turbans, swimwear, and other accessories. The tlc mission is to make these products, which can be hard to find, readily available in the privacy of your own home. You can see the catalog online at the tlc Web site, www.tlcdirect.org, or call 1-800-850-9445 to get a print copy sent to you.
