Carol’s Second Life
Carol’s Second Life
Article date: 1999/03/05
I am "eight years old". I count my age from the year I was diagnosed. I was fortunate enough to survive my breast cancer, ductal carcinoma, and a single mastectomy, chemotherapy, reconstruction, and problems from reconstruction. I was forty years old when I was diagnosed.

I ride long distance on horseback competitively. I returned to riding two months after my mastectomy, and have recently completed my 12th year of competition and about 2,500 miles.

I believe having goals, adjusting your lifestyle to eliminate stress, enjoying your family and your friends, and reassessing how you live your life is important for anyone to survive cancer. I consider each day a gift, and I try to do something for myself as well as something for someone else every day.

I could still have another fight on my hands but I am ready for it. I think everyone who receives a diagnosis of breast cancer must believe it is not a death sentence.
