Imagine the difficulty of undergoing treatment for cancer. Now imagine this treatment takes place hundreds of miles from home and your treatment extends through the holidays. The stress related to finding lodging and transportation added to anticipated holiday issues can often be as challenging as the cancer treatment itself.
To help people with cancer meet this challenge, the American Cancer Society created Hope Lodge. Hope Lodge is a temporary residential facility that provides free accommodations to cancer patients undergoing treatment. There are currently 15 Hope Lodges across the US. Another four Hope Lodges are under construction.
In addition to providing tangible resources including private rooms, kitchen facilities, and transportation to treatment facilities, the Hope Lodge also provides a support network and home-like atmosphere for people undergoing treatment for cancer and their families.
"Knowing that my husband and I have a clean, comfortable place to stay during his chemotherapy makes a huge difference for us, " said one Hope Lodge guest, "It's great to have built in friends to help us be away from family this Christmas."
Many Hope Lodge volunteers, staff, and guests have already planned holiday parties, potluck Christmas dinners, and New Year's celebrations across the country.
Twenty-seven of the 30 rooms available at the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge in Atlanta are booked for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is consistent with their normal occupancy rate of 81 percent.
Hope Lodges can provide support for people with cancer at a critical time. To find out more about Hope Lodges, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.
