Program sheds light on skin cancer
Article date: 1998/07/17
Summer is the perfect time to get the facts on limiting your sun exposure and preventing skin cancer. On July 19, America's Health Network (AHN) will feature "Sun Struck - Shedding Light on Skin Cancer" to give viewers the facts to protect themselves. The program will also introduce the Skin Protection Federation, a group of national organizations, including the American Cancer Society (ACS), which have banded together to fight skin cancer.

"Sun Struck" will be replayed during the week on July 20, 22, 23 and 25. Check your cable listing for AHN in your area. Or, view the network on Direct TV channel 289. If AHN isn't available in your community, contact your cable operator.

Guests on the program include:

  • Dr. Martin Weinstock, Chairman, National American Cancer Society Skin Cancer Advisory Group & Skin Protection Federation
  • Catherine Poole, author & melanoma survivor
  • Dr. Jeffrey Webber, American Cancer Society research grantee
  • Kirk Anderson, tennis pro & melanoma survivor.
  • Zachary & Morgan Hendricks, Florida kids who will demonstrate the Federation's new "Slip! Slop! Slap!" sun protection campaign

Future American Cancer Society programs on AHN include:
  • August 9 - Keeping Kids Cancer-Free
  • September 20 - Prostate Cancer
  • October 18 - Breast Cancer

Dates & program topics are subject to change.

The ACS provides editorial content and guests for a monthly show on AHN addressing the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer. The June 28 show, "Cancer Cure: Hype or Hope," covered recent cancer "cure" reports, in an effort to clear up public confusion about what current research promises for patients. The show also explored ways the public can get information to put this news in perspective.
