| Pay If Program |

In fiscal year 2009, the Society approved 410 grants out of 1805 peer review applications, but was only able to fund 259 grants. As a result, a significant number of potentially life saving research ideas could not be pursued by these investigators. These approved but unfunded applications are designated “pay-if,” i.e., approved to pay if funds become available. On average, 75 applications are placed in this category annually. Our goal is to fund all the research grants deemed worthy by our peer review committees. In FY 2009, 45 pay-if grants totaling $17 million were funded from a number of sources. Individual donors to the Research Program provided a significant portion of these funds, donating $10 million. The amount of funding required to pay each grant ranges from $69,000 to $850K+. For further information about making a restricted gift to the National Research and Training Program, please contact the Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org.
