Cancer Facts & Figures conveys the Society's annual estimates of expected numbers of new cancer cases and deaths. (This year's edition has a special section on racial and ethnic patterns.)
Highlights of Cancer Facts & Figures 1997:
- The five-year relative survival rate for all cancers combined is 40%.
- The National Institutes of Health estimate for overall cost of cancer is at an all time high of $104 billion.
- Lung cancer remains the number one cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. with an estimated 160,400 deaths
expected in 1997.
A special section on racial and ethnic patterns (pages 18-22) provides information on:
Cancer incidence among African Americans, Asian and Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, Whites and Hispanics, risk factors, screening, and access to health care for these population groups,
