New Avenues in Skin Cancer Research
What the American Cancer Society is Doing to Fight Skin Cancer

The American Cancer Society is committed to funding research to better understand what causes skin cancer and how to better prevent and treat the disease.

Melanoma skin cancer, which accounts for about 3% of skin cancers, is not the most common skin cancer, but it is the deadliest. In the last year alone, ACS awarded over $10 million in grants to investigators conducting cutting-edge research into the causes and treatment of melanoma. Our in-house researchers are also investigating all types of skin cancer as well as early detection and prevention practices.

In honor of Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month and National Cancer Research Month, we showcase some of those efforts.

Robertson, PhD, of Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, is part of a research team that recently discovered that a very simple chemical change to compounds extracted from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage might help prevent melanoma.
