Projects Funded by the India Cancer Initiative
Many projects funded by the India Cancer Initiative are through our American Cancer Society University trainings. Indian organizations that have participated in the training can apply for competitive seed grants to either launch new or strengthen existing cancer fighting projects. Majority of these projects have received funds in the range of five to ten thousand dollars.
Some of our ACSU projects include:
Establishing Screening Methods through Research
In collaboration with the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, the India Cancer Initiative is supporting research on emerging low-cost cancer screening methods. Investigators in the Department of Preventive Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai have been awarded a grant to assess the viability of a two-step cervical cancer screening process to establish diagnostic methods that reduce the number of false positive cervical cancer cases. Results of the study should inform economic- and ethically-appropriate population-based early detection programs in India.
The same researchers began a pioneer study in the summer of 2007 to compare the performance of three screening tests in detecting oral cancers. These findings will inform national and global cancer control efforts in low-resource settings that report high incidence of disease.
