The grand opening of the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society in the Philadelphia area realized the dream of providing a home away from home for cancer patients who have travelled to Philadelphia for treatment. On May 13, the volunteers, donors, and staff celebrated the completion of this phase of the project.

Those cutting the ribbon at the grand opening included Pennsylvania Division CEO Garry Pincock, AstraZeneca President Rich Fante, Fox Chase Cancer Center President and CEO Dr. Michael V. Seiden, Fox Chase Cancer Center Chancellor Dr. Robert C. Young, AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Campaign Co-Chairs Mitchell Morgan and Dr. Howard Kessler, Temple University Men’s Basketball Coach Fran Dunphy, and St. Joseph’s University Men’s Basketball Coach Phil Martelli.
Many were involved in the effort to bring a Hope Lodge to the Philadelphia area. AstraZeneca Hope Lodge is built on property donated by Fox Chase Cancer Center. AstraZeneca, with U.S. headquarters located in the Delaware Valley, provided a $2 million naming gift to the Hope Lodge in 2007. The volunteer campaign committee raised $10 million to build Hope Lodge.
The AstraZeneca Hope Lodge is the second American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Pennsylvania; the first is located in Hershey. The Society currently operates 28 Hope Lodge facilities nationwide, serving more than 20,000 cancer patients and their caregivers every year.
