Overview of Grant Funding by the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Lance Armstrong Foundation, and Department of Defense

Purpose of the workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to provide information about submitting grant applications to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), and the Department of Defense (DoD).

This workshop is recommended for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty, and/or researchers who have not received funding from the NIH, ACS, LAF, or DoD. Each organization has different guidelines and eligibility requirements. This workshop will provide you with information about what to do and what not to do in order to submit a competitive application for funding.

You will need to sign up for this workshop at the time of registration. No extra fee will be charged for attending this workshop.

What will this workshop cover?

National Cancer Institute
Speaker: Diana Jeffrey, PhD
Program Director, Office of Cancer Survivorship

Dr. Jeffrey will review:

• Grant mechanisms, including investigator-initiated awards, training grants, conference grants, minority supplements, and career development awards
• Components of a grant application, including the abstract research plan, human subjects assurance and approval, data safety monitoring, biosketches, budgets, cover letters, and appendices
• The steps by which applications are processed and reviewed, as well as the roles of Program Directors, Scientific Review Administrators, Grants Administrators, members of Scientific Review Boards, and the Board of Scientific Advisors

American Cancer Society
Speaker: Ronit Elk, PhD
Scientific Program Director, Research & Training Grants

Dr. Elk will review:

• Training grants, including grants for postdoctoral fellowships, clinical research training grants for junior faculty, career development awards (in cancer control) for primary care physicians, physician training awards (in preventive medicine), scholarships in cancer nursing (master’s and doctoral degree), and scholarships in clinical oncology social work (master’s and doctoral degree)
• Research grants for independent investigators, including research scholar grants for beginning investigators, and research scholar grants in psychosocial, behavioral and policy research for beginning and senior investigators

Lance Armstrong Foundation
Speaker: Brandy Gazo, MA, MSW
Program Officer, Research Grants

Ms. Gazo will review:

• Funding and eligibility requirements for investigator-initiated grant awards, including general research grants and young investigator grants
• The application process, including components of the letter of intent and grant proposal
• Review criteria and the steps by which applications are reviewed
• Helpful hints for submitting an effective research proposal to the Lance Armstrong Foundation

Department of Defense
Speaker: Capt. E. Melissa Kaime, MD
United State Navy

Capt. Kaime will describe and review:

• Cancer-related grant funding
• The review process
