Bicycles Battling Cancer

2011 Bicycles Battling Cancer Team

Visit the 2012 Bicycles Battling Cancer Web site.

Save the date!  The American Cancer Society 2012 Bicycles Battling Cancer fundraising ride in eastern Massachusetts will take place on Sunday, June 10!

Set a goal to participate and start training now. Participating fights cancer in two ways: it reduces your personal cancer risk while helping raise money for American Cancer Society programs of research, education, advocacy, and patient and family support.

In 2012, we are transitioning to a loop ride, with the start and finish line at the Bolton Fairgrounds in Lancaster, MA.

There will be three route options: Century, Metric Century & Lite (Lite ride will be 30-35 miles). More details coming soon!

It pays to sign up early! Registration fees vary depending on when you register:

- $50 before January 15
-  $75 January 16 - April 1
- $100 April 2 - June 10

Riders commit to raising a minimum of $300. All registrants get a Bicycles Battling Cancer athletic baseball cap, and riders who raise $500 or more will get an event jersey.

The first 50 riders to register - who are new to the event - will receive one of last year's jerseys.  (Sizes are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis.)

The 2011 event

On Sunday, June 12, 2011, more than 150 cyclists took part in the third annual American Cancer Society Bicycles Battling Cancer ride, raising more than $170,000. That represents a 20% increase in income over last year.

Nearly 100 riders starting at the Bancroft School in Worcester for the 100-mile century ride, 30 riders started from the Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough for the 100 km / 62-mile metric century ride;, and 25 riders started from Grace Bicycles in Holliston for the 30-mile 'lite' option.

"Riders had so much positive feedback as they finished the ride - despite the weather - and they are already talking about next year," said Holly Maki, the Society's project manager for endurance events.

At the finish line, David Kelleher, a cancer survivor and former guest of the AstraZeneca Hope LodgeCenter in Boston, spoke about his experience at the Lodge and the importance of raising funds to help improve the quality of life for cancer patients and families.  The Cape Cod resident rode in last year's BBC event and he hopes he will be able to ride again next year.

The top two individual fundraisers were Joseph Pirrotta, who raised $6,020 for the Society, and Cindy DiTullio, who raised $4,835.  Each received a special weekend getaway generously donated by Magic 106.7 and Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT.   Laura Hoffman of Team Covidien won a $500 gift card from Wheelworks.
