Relay For Life in Pennsylvania

Relay for life is the American Cancer Society’s nationwide signature activity and remains the strongest source of dollars for the Society to fund its mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. However, Relay For Life is not just a fundraiser; it is a unique activity that offers an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer while celebrating those who have battled or are still battling the disease.

Relay For Life is a fun, overnight, team event. Teams are formed from families, churches, organizations, schools, businesses, corporations, public employee groups, health care professionals, and more. Relay For Life activities bring together diverse groups--all with a common goal of wanting to strike back against cancer.

Typically held at school/community tracks and stadiums, teams have 8-15 members who each raise money and commit to having one member of the team on the track for the duration of the 24-hour event.

Relay For Life also honors cancer survivors; the survivors truly become the celebrities of the event. One special moment in each Relay is the evening Luminaria Ceremony. Hundreds, and in many cases, thousands of Luminarias are placed around the track to remember loved ones who have lost their battle to cancer or to honor a cancer survivor.

The Pennsylvania Division had much to celebrate with respect to Relay For Life this past year. In 2009:

  • We held over 220 Relay For Life events that raised $19.5 million!
  • Nearly 8,800 teams participated in Relay For Life.
  • We celebrated with 18,290 survivors.

Thank you to all the participants whose hard work and dedication ensures that the Pennsylvania Division is raising the necessary funds to help fight cancer. These dollars play a major role in finding a cure for cancer, educating the public about cancer treatment and prevention, and providing services to those battling the disease.
