PA ACT Teams Named Volunteer Team of the Year
Congratulations to the ACT Leadership Task Force, State Lead Ambassador Alice Loych, and Pennsylvania’s ACT Teams on being named the Volunteer Team of the Year by ACS CAN! ACT Teams have been formed in each of the Pennsylvania’s 19 Congressional districts with volunteer leads and staff partners. The ACT Teams were involved in state and federal calls to action, advocacy at events such as Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and conducting member recruitment and fundraising for ACS CAN
Pennsylvania ACT volunteers have been involved with policy initiatives from the beginning. By promoting Calls to Action at local board, team and committee meetings, and Relay and Strides events, two important state bills became law in September 2008 – the Clean Indoor Air Act and expanded colorectal cancer screening coverage. They organized email campaigns, Picture A Cure recruitment, phone call campaigns, and rolling walk-ins on targeted lawmakers to get these bills passed. The ACT Teams also acted on federal alerts including SCHIP, appropriations, health care reform, and FDA authority over tobacco products. Because of visits to Congressional members in DC and back home, our ACT volunteers brought in the support of 15 out of 19 House members and both Senators for FDA. The record of support was even better for SCHIP – volunteer visits resulted in 17 out of 19 House members and both Senators with yes votes.
In addition, these volunteers were integral in Pennsylvania’s ACS CAN fundraising and membership success in 2009. Fundraising efforts in FY2009 were well over goal, and membership numbers doubled from last year.
Congratulations to the ACT Leadership Task Force on this well-deserved honor!
