Areas reviewed: Mechanistic research into the multistage process of cancer development including basic, preclinical, and clinical studies examining how diet, physical activity, energy balance, and the environment can affect cancer risk and response to therapy. The committee reviews applications that use biochemistry, cell biology, and animal model approaches to provide new opportunities for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Applications focusing on applied research will be given priority.
