| Research Program and Funding |
The research program is composed of two main umbrellas: Extramural Grants and the intramural components of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research, the Behavioral Research Center (BRC), and the Statistics and Evaluation Center (SEC). The Extramural Grants Department reviews and administers both Research Grants and Health Professional Training Grants (HPTGs). HPTGs include both grants and scholarships awarded to nurses, physicians, and oncology social work professionals. As the nation's largest private, not-for-profit source of funds for scientists studying cancer, the American Cancer Society (ACS) focuses its funding on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals. All intramural department staff conduct applied cancer research in-house.
| Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS) are designed to address a wide range of potential exposures, such as tobacco use, that may be associated with cancer.
| Surveillance Research tracks cancer trends in the US population.
| SEC staff is involved with evaluating ACS programs, and does research that leads to increased cancer control.
