Susan M. Gapstur, PhD, MPH
Dr. Gapstur earned her BS degree (with Highest Honors) in Biology; focus on Microbiology, from the University of Wisconsin LaCross in 1983. She then completed MPH (1989) and PhD (1993) degrees in Epidemiology (minor biostatistics) from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Following postdoctoral training at the Arizona Cancer Center, University of Arizona from 1993-1994 , Dr. Gapstur joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University, she was subsequently tenured and ultimately promoted to full professor . She also served as the Program Leader in Cancer Prevention (2002-2004) and then as Associate Director of Cancer Prevention and Control (2004-2009) in the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. Dr. Gapstur left Northwestern University in 2009 to join the Research Department at the American Cancer Society as the Vice President of the Epidemiology Research Program. She also is Adjunct Professor position in the Department of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.
Dr. Gapstur is a cancer epidemiologist whose research has focused on the role of the lifestyle and hormonal determinants of cancer risk and prevention, with a particularly emphasis on alcohol intake and its relationship with breast, and other cancers. In addition, her research is designed to identify potential prevention strategies for reducing racial/ethnic disparities in cancer incidence and mortality.
