apheresis

[a-fur-REE-sis] may also be called pheresis (fur-ree-sis). A procedure in which blood is taken out of the body (through a catheter in a vein), part of the blood is removed, and the rest of the blood is infused back into the body. May be called plasmapheresis if plasma is removed, leukapheresis if white blood cells are removed, or plateletpheresis when platelets are removed.
