bone marrow transplant
a treatment that replaces blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow that have been destroyed by high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. The new stem cells come from the bone marrow of either the patient (autologous) or a donor (allogeneic). Bone marrow transplants (BMTs) were the first type of stem cell transplant used, but they are now done less often than in the past.
