[me-dee-uh-STY-num] any structure or area of the body that is between other parts. Commonly refers to the central part of the chest, which is surrounded by the breastbone, the backbone, and both lungs. The chest mediastinum contains the heart, large blood vessels, trachea, esophagus, and lymph nodes. See also lymph nodes.
