segmental resection

[seg-men-tuhl re-sek-shun] surgery to remove part of an organ. With colon cancer, for instance, the cancer and a length of normal colon on either side of the cancer, as well as the nearby lymph nodes are removed. The remaining sections of the colon are then attached to each other. See also colon, lymph node.
